Ron Coddington,  noted historian  and author of  three Civil War histories including African American Faces of the Civil War: An Album will present the stories of men of color in battle through graphical representations: cartes de visite, ambrotypes, and tintypes. These compelling narratives of African Americans within the Civil War broaden and illuminate the historical contexts of the war.

My ancestor, Charles Henry Whitford, joined the volunteer unit of the All Black, 54th Mass., Co. A. I have tried many sites but no one has a photo of Company A, which consisted of 100 free black men. Certainly, this unit was famous, because one of Frederick Douglass’ son was in the same unit.
