Steppin’ Out On A Sunday Afternoon

The New Bedford Historical Society Hosts  Steppin’ Out on a Sunday Afternoon. 

Join the New Bedford Historical Society for our annual fundraiser on Sunday, May 17 from 3 – 8 PM. Held at the Hawthorne Country Club, there will be music in three rooms by Elan Trotman, Cabo Verdean music by Mont Cara, and Lady K spinning R&B favorites. Tickets are $60 and include an opportunity to win art by Alison Wells, dinner buffet and an opportunity to party for a cause –  supporting the Nathan and Mary Johnson House, a site on the historic Underground Railroad and the first home in freedom of Frederick and Anna Douglass.

Celebrate Sonia Sanchez’s 80th Birthday

Join the members of the Historical as we celebrate the legacy of Sonia Sanchez on her 80th birthday. Poets Everett Hoagland, Iva Brito, Pat Gomes and Amanda DeGrace will share their  personal connections to Sonia as a writer, poet, activist, founding member of the Black Arts and Black Studies Movement and her impact on our lives.

Documentation and Preservation Workshop

This workshop will be held on Saturday, November 8 from 2:30 – 4:30 PM at the Corson Building on 33 William Street. Learn how to care for family papers and how to document the service of the veterans of our foreign wars.  The event is free and open to the public.

Ron Coddington,  noted historian  and author of  three Civil War histories including African American Faces of the Civil War: An Album will present the stories of men of color in battle through graphical representations: cartes de visite, ambrotypes, and tintypes. These compelling narratives of African Americans within the Civil War broaden and illuminate the historical contexts of the war.

Hosted by Everett Hoagland with guest poet Tony Medina, winner of the 2013 Langston Hughes Society Award and a professor of Creative Writing at Howard University.
